Maggie Harris is blindsided when her husband, Adam, tells her that he is having an affair and that their marriage is over, and she falls into a deep depression. When she realizes she is drinking too much, she knows she needs to find a new way to cope. Her salvation comes from an unexpected place: a call from her travel agent regarding a trip to Rome booked for her and Adam. Facing the loss of a nonrefundable deposit, Maggie goes ahead with the trip alone. On the plane, she befriends a woman who offers her friendship and a way forward. Maggie has spent the last several decades being a good wife and mother instead of prioritizing her own wants and needs, so she makes some wrong turns along the way. Although Pagán (Forever Is the Worst Long Time, 2017) adds nothing new to the familiar plot of a woman picking up the pieces after her husband leaves, her writing is fun and engaging. Maggie is a wonderful character, and readers will identify with her struggles and successes in rebuilding her life.--Pearson, Lynnanne Copyright 2018 Booklist

It's bad enough when Adam, Maggie's husband of 30 years, announces that he's -leaving her for another woman. It's even worse when, after the divorce is final, he tells her that he'd never actually consummated the affair-he was just tired of being married to Maggie. She's well on her way to developing an alcohol problem, her kids are grown and don't need her as much, and she's working an awful part-time job. Maggie is stuck, and she knows that she needs to break the rut, so she goes by herself on the Roman holiday that she had planned jointly with Adam, and connects with a new friend who needs a house sitter in Michigan for six months. While there, she joins a support group for new divorcées and meets a new man, -Charlie. VERDICT This story has been told before, but Pagán (Forever Is the Worst Long Time) has created a winning character in Maggie. Watching her wake up to the world around her and realize that there's more to life than a dull marriage is exciting and relatable. Women's fiction readers will find a lot to like in this book.-Jennifer Mills, Shorewood-Troy Lib., IL © Copyright 2018. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
