The U.S. Supreme Court declined Monday to hear an appeal from two former State University of West Georgia baseball players Monday, leaving them the prospect of a retrial on charges of sexually assaulting a female student.
South Carolina left fielder Michael Campbell had surgery to remove a rib and help clear up a blood clot in an artery in his right shoulder. Campbell, who hit .312 last year with 14 homers and 52 RBI, says he'll be ready to go in two to three months.
Former Utah baseball coach Bill Kinneberg was hired Wednesday to coach the Utes again. Kinneberg, who led Utah to a 30-22 record in 1996, replaces Tim Esmay, who left last month to take a job as an assistant at Arizona State. Kinneberg has been a minor league pitching coach for the Chicago White Sox since January 2003.
Jack Smitheran resigned as head baseball coach at UC Riverside on Thursday after 31 years with the program. Smitheran went 974-709-3 at UC Riverside, and was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2002. He'll be replaced by assistant Doug Smith.
Utah baseball coach Tim Esmay has resigned to take a job as an assistant at Arizona State, his alma mater. Esmay, who was 213-235-1 in eight seasons at Utah, was an infielder for the Sun Devils in 1986-87 and was an assistant at ASU.
Jerry Meyers, an assistant coach at South Carolina for the past eight years, has been named head baseball coach at Old Dominion. Meyers, who helped the Gamecocks to an 372-152 mark and two SEC titles in his eight years in Columbia, was an assistant at ODU in 1996, when the Monarchs won the Colonial Athletic Association title.
Detroit Mercy discontinued its baseball program Monday after fund-raising efforts by a parents group over the last three weeks failed to garner enough support to keep it running.
Joe Hindelang, Penn State's winningest baseball coach, retired Thursday after 14 years with the program. Hindelang went 389-355-2 with the Nittany Lions, including 28-29 this season, and led them to the Big Ten regular-season title in 1996. Penn State also advanced to the super regionals in 2000.
Long Beach State righthander Jered Weaver received the inaugural Roger Clemens award Thursday as the top pitcher in college baseball. The 6-foot-7, 205-pound Weaver was 15-1 with a 1.62 ERA and 213 strikeouts with just 21 walks in 144 innings last season.

Cal State Fullerton's Kurt Suzuki won the Johnny Bench Award as college baseball's best catcher. Suzuki helped lead the Titans to their fourth national title, driving in the winning run with an RBI single in a 3-2 victory over Texas.
Auburn hired former assistant Tom Slater to lead the baseball program. Slater, who replaces the fired Steve Renfroe, spent last season as an assistant at Florida after three years as head coach at Virginia Military Institute. The McKinney Marshals opened a 1,030-seat ballpark this season in the upstart Texas Collegiate Baseball League. But in Texas, there's always room to grow. Jonathan Wyatt hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning and Georgia beat Georgia Tech 5-3 on Saturday to sweep the NCAA Super Regional and reach the College World Series. Wyatt's homer the first of his freshman season gave the Bulldogs (43-21) their second trip to Omaha in the last four years.
The Texas Longhorns are headed back to the College World Series for the third time in three years after defeating Vanderbilt 10-2 in Saturday's NCAA Super Regional, clinching the best of three games series 2-0. The Longhorns will make its 31st appearance in the College World Series.
