Succeed in School
The most important thing you can do is be involved with your child’s education before and during their school years. Your child’s success in school takes hard work, planning, a few basic skills and the desire to want to succeed.
The Basics
In the home:
♦ Children need time with their parents – no matter how busy you are
♦ When children get attention at home, they have a greater sense of security and self-worth
♦ Communicate with your child – in the car, on a bus, at mealtime, at bedtime
♦ Ask questions and listen to their answers
♦ Let them see you read, read to them, read with them
♦ Visit the library and get a library card!
♦ Keep pencils and paper, crayons, and markers handy for notes, crafts or schoolwork
♦ Teach them to do things for themselves, don’t do the work for them
♦ Break jobs into small pieces and then do them one at a time
♦ Create a reasonable, consistent schedule of jobs your child can do around the house
♦ Develop consistent rules they can depend on
♦ Set limits on watching the television
♦ Watch the television with your children and talk about what they see
♦ Stress that education is important and all homework needs to be done
♦ Create a special place where your child can study
♦ Help your child develop a schedule to accomplish all tasks and show that you have confidence in them
♦ Show interest in all they do and praise them for a job well done
In the School:
♦ Become involved at your child’s school either as a volunteer or spectator
♦ Talk to your child about the value of hard work and doing the best they can
♦ Talk to your child about what is happening in the school
♦ Read your child’s report card and messages from teachers
♦ Meet with your child’s teachers whenever possible
♦ Take part in school events
