Nineteen to Thirty-Six Months

Developing Abilities


~ Understands simple prepositions -- in, out, up, down, etc. ~
~ Answers questions with action words ~
~ Points to body parts when requested ~
~ Enjoys listening to songs, rhymes, and stories ~
~ Names pictured objects ~
~ Speaks clearly most of the time and asks questions ~
~ Begins to recite songs and rhymes independently ~
~ 24 month old uses two word sentences ~
~ 36 month old uses 3 to 5 word sentences ~


To Do for Parents


~ Continue to hold conversations and teach new words daily~
~Accept child's speech rather than correcting mistakes~
~ Spend at least 15 minutes reading aloud each day ~
~ Begin to use the public library regularly ~
~ Sprinkle home environment with good reading materials ~
~ Ask about pictures in books while reading ~
~ Provide toys for creative dramatics ~
~ Provide materials for writing and drawing ~
