FAQ-Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a library card?
Library cards are free for all Monroe County Residents OR those who work in OR those owning property in Monroe County. ( Proof of ownership required) Identification with your name and current address and phone number is requested. Out of Town Patrons may purchase a Patron Card at a cost of $20 valid for 3 years.

How long may I keep an item?
Books, magazines, and audios are checked out for 2 weeks. These items may be renewed two times. DVDs/Videos are checked out for 4 days. Patrons MUST be 18 years of age to check out videos and have a current library card in good standing order.

How many items may I check out?
New card holders may check out 2 books the first time, but when those are returned on time they may check out 15-20 books in a two week time period. Videos are checked out 4 per household for 4 days.

Where do I return library materials?
Items should be returned to the circulation desk during business hours. A book drop is available by the side entrance for materials that must be returned when the library is closed.

May I reserve an item if it is checked out?
Yes. We will notify you when the item is returned and will hold it for approximately one week.

What is Inter-Library Loan?
Books which have been in publication over six months and specific articles may be requested from other libraries. Videos, audios and genealogy are not normally available through Inter-library loan.

Is there a fine for overdue materials?
All materials except DVDs/videos are subject to a fine of five cents per day, not including Sundays and holidays (days when the library is closed.) DVD/Video fines are $1.00 per day per movie. Audio fines are 50 cents per day per audio.

May reference books be checked out?
Reference books do not circulate. We will make up to 5 free copies with 25 cents for each additional copy.

Are computers available?
Yes, there are computers available free to the public for word processing, reference, children's games and Internet access. Copies are 25 each for black and white or 50 cents for color.

How about special programs?
Regularly scheduled programs for pre school children are Thursday mornings at 9:00 a.m. Family Night Out programs are held on the second Tuesday of each month (excluding summer months) at 6:30 pm for all ages. The Summer Reading Program is held the second week in June for children ages 0-12.
