Summer Reading Program

The 2009 Summer Reading Program theme for kids is “Once Upon A Time” featuring castles, dragons, knights, princes, princesses, fairy tales, folk tales and more.

REGISTRATION:

Registration to participate in the 2009 Summer Reading Program will begin Monday, May 18th.

The reading program will continue for 10 weeks, ending on July 25th.

You can register any time between May 18th and July 25th.

To register, fill out a registration card for each child participating and turn the card in at the front desk or on the bookmobile. Each child who registers will get a bookmark and a reading log.

REQUIREMENTS:

BABIES through 3rd GRADE:

Babies, toddlers and young children up through the 3rd grade must read or listen to a minimum of 10 books.

The book titles must be written down on the inside of the child's reading log.

After the child has read or listened to the required 10 books, the reading log must be brought to the library or bookmobile and must be stamped and initialed by a library staff member.

The deadline for completing the program and having the reading log stamped is Saturday, July 25, 2009 by closing time at 12:00 noon.

Parents and children are encouraged to keep reading throughout the 10 week program, even after the minimum requirement of 10 books has been met.

GRADES 4 THRU 7:

Kids entering grades 4 through 7 are required to spend total of at least 10 hours reading during the 10 week program between May 18th and July 25th.

Ten hours sounds like a lot of time...but, reading just 15 minutes a day for 4 days each week during the 10 week program will equal the 10 hours required.

The time spent reading must be recorded on the chart on the back page of the reading log. Every time you spend time reading, be sure to write it down on your reading log.

The titles of the books read can also be written inside the reading log, but this is not required.

After reading and recording the total of 10 hours on the reading log, the log must be brought to the library or the bookmobile and stamped and initialed by a library staff member. The deadline for completing the program and having the reading log stamped is Saturday, July 25, 2009 by closing time at 12:00 noon.

Kids are encouraged to keep spending time reading even after they have met the requirement of 10 hours.

All kids who meet the requirement of either 10 books read or 10 hours spent reading will be invited to attend the Summer Reading Awards Party where they will be recognized and will receive an achievement certificate and a prize.

The Awards Party will be held on Thursday, July 30th at 6:30 p.m. at the Jackson Parish Community Center.
