Title: The Help

Author: Kathryn Stockett

Format: Book

Rating: Loved

Review: This warm, witty tale of segregation era Mississippi is worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as To Kill a Mockingbird and I think deserves to be on the short-list for Pulitzer consideration. Determined to achieve her dreams of writing, editing, and independence, a young white woman recruits two black maids to assist her in writing a tell-all book about the line that still divides whites and blacks in the 1960s in Mississippi. I recommend it to anyone who loves a great read.

Title: Brimstone

Author: Robert B. Parker

Format: CD Book

Rating: Loved

Review: The success of any CD book is largely determined by the selection of a reader, and Titus Welliver is the perfect selection for this story. Welliver is well-known to many Western fans and the tough but courtly Adams on HBO’s Deadwood. His voice captures the spirit of the West, and he does a fantastic job with all the characters. The story itself is a sequel to Appaloosa and Resolution,  and it should really only be read or listened to after experiencing those words first. The series is highly recommended for fans of Westersn.

Title: The City and the City

Author: China Mieville

Format: Book

Rating: Loved

Review: China Mieville is a true genius, and possibly the most creative writer working today. Known best for his fantasy books, this is his first attempt at noir, and he nails the genre brilliantly. The two cities of the title are Beszel and UIQoma. The two cities overlap each other, and occupy the same physical space, but the inhabitants of each city cannot acknowledge the inhabitants of the other, or cross into spaces exclusive to the other city. To do so is a breach, and is a worse crime than murder. The main character is a Beszel detective. Recommended for anyone who appreciates intellectually challenging material. This is an instant classic that is sure to win some sci-fi/fantasy awards (although it is really neither – the separation between the cities is more psychological than meta-physical), and deserves to be on the short list for the Pulitzer. I could see The City and the City being the subject of college classes some day.

Title: The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

Author: Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Burrows

Format: Book

Rating: Loved

Review: This wonderful book tells the story of a book club that forms on the British island of Guernsey during the German occupation of World War II. One of the only acceptable ways for the island folk to assemble, the book club enables its members to maintain their sanity and humanity in the face of tremendous suffering. The book is both joyous and a tear-jerker, and is full of rich, feisty characters. It is told in the epistolary style (a series of letters), but give it a try and you’ll be hooked.

Title: Cemetery Dance

Author: Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

Format: Book

Rating: Loved

Review: A return to form for Preston and Child after the enjoyable but overly-mystical Wheel of Darkness. Pendergast and D’Agosta are always an enjoyable, humorous duo, and they keep up their banter well. The plot is somewhat overly complicated, and while the explanations for seemingly magical events are scientifically based, the scenario as a whole strains credibility. Not one of the better Preston and Child, but still fun for their fans and techno-thriller philes.

Review: In the old days, admitting that you read romance novels was tantamount to revealing a dirty little secret. Not so with Phillips’ books. This is my third and I’m glad there are more! Gone are the contrived situations employed to create tension between the characters. With Phillips, the characters – richly drawn – drive the plot with intelligence and wit, all the while remaining true-to-life. A lovely escapist read that you don’t want to put down!

Title: The Secret Speech

Author: Tom Rob Smith

Format: Book

Rating: Loved

Review: A fantastic sequel to Child 44. The tone of the book is influenced by the reign of Khrushchev, just as Child 44 was ruled by the iron fist of Stalin. “Homicide detective” Leo Demidov returns as a tough, sympathetic protagonist, and the book is alternately exciting and heart-rending. This book has a great deal to say about the meaning of family, and the ending is a tear-jerker.
