You can borrow any of the Library’s books or other materials (except for non-circulating items such as Reference) by presenting your library card at the check-out desk. The Library maintains strict confidentiality of your records, but for your convenience you may choose to retain a history of what you borrow. By entering your personal identification number (PIN) you can see what is checked out to you now and what you’ve borrowed in the past.
The loan period is three weeks and most materials may be renewed for an additional two weeks if no one else is waiting. You can renew your loans in person, by telephone, mail or over the Internet by accessing My Account on the Library web site. You may return your books anytime the Library is open, or put them in the Book Return box just outside the front door when the Library is closed. For adult materials returned after their due date, an overdue fine of 10 cents is charged for each day the Library is open, up to a maximum of $3.00 per item. Overdue fines for children’s materials are 5 cents per day, with a maximum fine of $2.00 per item. Materials lost or damaged beyond use must be paid for at current replacement cost.
With your library card you can borrow adult, young adult and children’s books, magazines, large print materials, audio-books and music on cassette or CD, and videos. You can use your library card to borrow materials from other libraries in Vermont, other states or foreign countries through the Inter-Library loan system if what you need is not in the Library’s extensive collection.
Library cards are offered free of charge to all residents of Springfield and North Springfield. An annual fee based on the Library’s per capita local tax support is charged for non-resident borrowers. To get your library card, simply fill out a registration form and show proof of address. Children are issued their own library card with a parent’s signature on the registration form.
