This thriller, set in the beautiful and treacherous Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota, is part rescue mission, part survival story, part treasure hunt, and part meditation on good and evil. It stars Krueger’s longtime hero, the half-Irish and half-Ojibwe Cork O’Connor, former Chicago cop and sheriff of Tamarack County, currently a North Woods bar owner and occasional private eye. In this, the twenty-second in the series, Cork embarks on a canoe and camping trip in an all-male group that includes his son and grandson. Another group has left before them, guided by Cork’s lifetime friend, Cordell Bishop. At one recently vacated campsite, Cork discovers one of the men from the preceding group with a bullet through his head, while Cordell’s status has now changed from guide to hostage. Cork’s own status changes, too, after the rest of his party leaves to find help. Cork is now alone, with no weapon and a dead satnav. The thriller is both harrowing and fascinating, as Cork uses his deep knowledge of the area to outwit the men dragging his friend with them on their quest. With Krueger’s expert plotting, this thriller presents a topography of terror.
