Mission Statement

The mission of the Adams County Library System is to provide all county residents access to library materials and information services that address the needs and expand the aspirations of the community for formal and lifelong learning, enrichment and pleasure.

Internet Policy Statement

ADULT FLOOR AGREEMENT
Patrons are required to read and sign this policy statement before they may use our public Internet computers. If the patron is under the age of 16, a parent will have to sign giving permission for their child to use the Internet and that they understand the rules, which are listed here.

The library is making Internet service available out of a commitment to offer the most up to date information possible. The library is in compliance with all state and federals laws regulating the Internet. The library does not endorse any products or materials that you find on the internet. The library can not guarantee that all the information on the Internet is accurate. If you have any questions about the accuracy of any information, please feel free to ask a librarian.

Procedures:

  1. Each time you come to use the Internet you must see a librarian to sign in.

  2. You may schedule computers 1 – 4 in Gettysburg in advance by calling or visiting, however computers 5 or 6 can not be scheduled in advance.

  3. You may schedule computers in Arendtsville, Littlestown and New Oxford in advance by calling or visiting the library.

  4. Each Internet session is limited to 1 hour per day in Gettysburg and ˝ hour per day in Arendtsville, Littlestown, and New Oxford. Additional time may be given if there is no one scheduled or waiting to use the computer.

  5. Chat is allowed on computers 1 – 4 in the Gettysburg facility, however, it is not allowed on computers 5 or 6 and it is completely forbidden in Littlestown, Arendtsville and New Oxford. However, the librarians are not trained in the use of these programs and will not be able to answer your questions.

  6. The librarians reserve the right to refuse Internet access to patrons who have broken our policy statement.

  7. The librarians are not able to monitor the use by children at all times, therefore, it is the responsibility of the parents to monitor their child’s use of the Internet in the library.

UNACCEPTABLE FORMS OF BEHAVIOR:

Viewing, sending or producing any obscene or sexual material that might be seen by a minor (someone under the age of 18) that is defined as a crime in 18 Pa.C.S. 5903.

Sending messages to the staff or others that are harassing in nature

Making a disturbance while using the Internet station, this includes excessive talking or fighting over computers

Loitering at the computer stations

Unauthorized use of computer software or breaking any copyright laws

Downloading any files to the PC in the library is forbidden. This includes changing the windows wall paper, downloading programs to run on the library computers or bringing a disk into the library and saving to that disk. This is to minimize the threat of viruses.

Any violation of the unacceptable forms of behavior will result in the person being asked to leave the library and a second offence will cause the person will permanently lose Internet privileges.

Buying products over the Internet is a growing trend in the country. However, the library does not endorse any merchandise you find on the Internet and would caution against purchasing anything without checking out the company selling the item.

If you have any question about the acceptable and unacceptable uses of the site, please ask a librarian.

Finally, the library is NOT responsible for any damage, either direct or indirect, that may occur to your home system by the use of our Internet connections.
