The Adult Literacy Program needs committed, caring volunteers to become
tutors in the program. Our tutors have made a difference and are making a
difference in students’ lives. They make our program the success that
it is. It is easy to become a Volunteer Literacy Trainer. The requirements
are as follows:
- A volunteer must have 12 hours of instruction using the
LITSTART training method. - Tutor Training is free of charge to our volunteers. A
typical tutor-training workshop is generally held at Veterans Memorial Library in two sessions.
- We would like volunteers to be willing and able to tutor a student for at least one hour per week, as well as put in the time to
prepare the weekly lesson.
- We also ask our volunteer tutors to commit to at
least six and preferably nine months of tutoring.
- Tutors must register as CRDL volunteers, filling out the Volunteer Form, which includes a background check.
The library provides continuing tutor training, materials, tutor and student
support, and informal assessment at no charge to the tutor or student.
Generally, students meet with their tutors here at Veterans Memorial Library for
their weekly sessions.
If you wish to enroll in the volunteer tutor training or if you have any questions, contact
Rob Wang,
Literacy Coordinator at Veterans Memorial Library at (989) 772-3488 x 14 or
e-mail: rwang@crdl.org. Please call to find out when the next Litstart Tutor Training is scheduled.
