The purpose of our library's literacy program is to provide free and confidential services for adults who lack basic skills. These services include:
Anyone wishing to take advantage of these opportunities should contact a Literacy Coordinator at the Library and request to be matched with a tutor. A Literacy Coordinator will ask for some personal information on the student, such as: name, address, phone number and available times for the student to meet with a tutor. Also, an informal assessment will be given to the student to determine his/her relative reading level so that the tutor will know where he/she needs to start. Tutoring is done one-on-one with each student and is free of charge. Students typically meet once a week with their tutors for at least one hour. Lessons cover the basics of reading, writing, speaking and general life skills. They are geared to meet an individual student's needs and goals. Usually tutoring sessions are held here at Veterans Memorial Library, but other arrangements can be worked out if it is not convenient for the student to come to the library. The identities of students in the library’s literacy program are kept confidential unless a student is willing to share his/her name and experiences with others in the program or the public. Contact Literacy Student Coordinator, Linda at (989) 772-3488 x 25 or e-mail: lhall@crdl.org for tutoring services. Or, contact Literacy Coordinator, Rob at (989) 772-3488 x 14, or email: rwang@crdl.org |
