Literacy Program History

Our Roots and Our Mission

When first established, our communities literacy organization was known as the Mount Pleasant Area Volunteers for Literacy. In the fall of 1995, that group was disbanded, and the Veterans Memorial Library Board of Trustees approved the adoption of the Adult Literacy Program as a service of the library. Several of our volunteer tutors were tutors for the Mount Pleasant Area Volunteers for Literacy and continue to volunteer their time to tutor students through the Literacy Program at the library. The first tutor training that was supported by the library was in February and March of 1996. There were seven tutors certified. There have been many other training sessions offered since then. Isabella County United Way, Listening Ear, Mt. Pleasant Adult and Community Education, and many individuals have supported in funding and/or providing services to the Mount Pleasant Area Volunteers for Literacy program and continue to support the Adult Literacy Program at the library.

Chippewa River District Library was awarded an LSTA grant in 2000 to construct a Computer Training Center at Veterans Memorial Library. Part of this grant funding was designated for literacy services, and the library has purchased computer software to enhance and supplement our adult literacy instruction. This program is currently funded with contributions, grants and a general fund appropriation. Some of our general supports include:

  • Chippewa River District Library,
  • Friends of the Library,
  • Mt. Pleasant GFWC,
  • Central Michigan Newspapers, and
  • Isabella County United Way.

The support of the library, our volunteers and our community makes our future look brighter than ever.

Our mission will continue to be one that provides free and confidential literacy services to all in our community who are in need of them. These services include:

  • Student Assessment/Evaluation
  • One-on-One Tutor Training
  • Conversation Partners
  • community Orientations
  • Tutor/Student Support

We feel confident that our Adult Literacy Program will grow and improve over the coming years. Click here for information on the next tutor training session.
