In 1881 Texas, a young soldier seeking revenge and a woman raised by the Apache find unexpected kinship amid the post-Civil War violence. The U.S. Army recruits former soldiers from either side of the Civil War to protect settlers. Some don't care whom they're fighting they need money and love violence. Sam, whose wife was killed by the Mescalero Apaches, is one of the rangers pursuing those responsible for her death but his desire for revenge is nothing like the savagery in his platoon. Sam's preconceptions about violence begin to dissipate, stripping him of certainty about how his wife died, and he refuses to kill Apache women. Nejeunee is a Mexican woman raised by the Apache who is struggling to protect herself and her child from their customs. As she begins to remember her childhood, she encounters a young white man and discovers she trusts him. Although their love story is secondary, the well-developed characters make this western suitable for a wide audience.--Jeanne Greene Copyright 2010 Booklist
