Learning to identify and acknowledge emotions is the first step to navigating them, suggests Healy, a children's emotional coach. Using cube-shaped figures that display a range of facial expressions, Healy introduces the four basic emotions: happiness, anger, fear, and sadness. Each section features a variety of familiar circumstances that might elicit a particular emotion-the death of a pet may cause sadness, while parental separation or divorce may make kids fearful. Healy offers suggestions for dealing with overwhelming emotions through affirmations, mindfulness exercises, or by speaking to an adult. Photographs of children in various emotional states offer visual examples of how strong feelings might be expressed, while infographics demonstrate the brain science behind emotions. A useful handbook for readers struggling to productively express themselves. Ages 7-10. (Sept.) © Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

This informative and insightful book speaks directly to elementary-age readers, describing some of the emotions they'll most likely experience during their formative years (happiness, anger, sadness, fear) and offering mindfulness strategies for coping with them. It explains scientifically what happens in the brain when each of these emotions is expressed, how they affect the body, and a wide range of situations in which they may occur, including family separation and divorce, being the new kid at school, grieving a pet's death, and being bullied or being a bully. Back matter and supplemental materials include full-page cartoons, photos, quotes, a table of contents, a glossary, and an index. The cheerful graphics some emoji-like, others resembling those in I Spy books seem, at first glance, distracting or chaotic, but aren't. The book effectively helps children understand their emotions better while building empathy for others. Though there are many books on feelings for younger children, far fewer exist for this age group, and this is an essential edition.--Sharon Rawlins Copyright 2018 Booklist
