Cara is studying to be a kindergarten teacher, but her day job is doing research for the bounty-hunting business she and her sisters run. When the family hits a financial crisis, Cara decides to help out by bringing in a few "skips" on her own. She realizes picking a murderer as her first takedown was not a wise decision when she comes face to face with Henry Kavenski after she breaks into his hotel room. After some time together, she begins to wonder if he is truly guilty of the grisly double murder he's accused of committing, especially when he does everything he can to protect her. Danger follows them at every turn, and they will have to rely on each other to make it out alive. Ruggle (In Her Sight) turns what could have been a predictable story of a bounty hunter falling for a fugitive into an unpredictable, high-octane action adventure tale. VERDICT This fast-paced romance is laced with humor and a bit of heat. Fans of Janet Evanovitch's "Stephanie Plum" series will enjoy the interplay between Cara and Henry but will find more grit and less slapstick humor.—Courtney Pentland, Omaha, NE

Plenty of adventure can’t make up for the underdeveloped hero and bland heroine of the second romantic suspense novel in Ruggle’s Rocky Mountain Bounty Hunters series (after In Her Sights). Cara Pax dreams of leaving behind her family’s bounty hunting business to become a kindergarten teacher, but when Pax Bail Recovery hits a financial rough patch, she’s determined to help. Despite her lack of experience in the field, Cara attempts to pick up a high value bounty on accused murderer Henry Kavenski, but he catches her tailing him almost immediately, confronts her, and scares her off. Cara tries to play it safe by leaving Kavenski to her more experienced sisters and instead pursuing Geoffrey Abbott, a white-collar criminal wanted for tax evasion, only to discover that Abbott is far more dangerous than he seems. When the two cases violently collide, Henry saves Cara’s life, and she goes on the run with the handsome, shockingly caring, likely innocent Henry. Predictable situations give rise to a few fun action sequences, but the lackluster love story slows the pace. Ruggle’s fans will be disappointed. Agent: Jessica Waterson, Sandra Dijkstra Literary.
