Volunteer Opportunities

Mission Statement:  The mission of the volunteer organization of Eckhart Public Library is to enhance and support the library services for the community and to provide opportunities for individual service and personal growth.

VOLUNTEER JOB OPPORTUNTIES AT THE ECKHART PUBLIC LIBRARY

ADMINISTRATIVE:
• Administrative Support - (Ongoing) Assist the library staff in a variety of duties such as: filing, photocopying, data entry, assisting with mailings, proof-reading, and other duties as assigned.
• Copying – (Ongoing) Assist with copying, collating, and folding of a variety of library brochures.
• Library Patron Count – Annual count needed for state reports. Count patrons entering the library while perusing your favorite reading material in two hour increments.
• Newsletter Mailing - (Ongoing) Prepare the monthly newsletter for mailing (collating, labeling, folding, and delivery to the post office).
• Security Patrol – Get your daily exercise and socializing by patrolling the EPL campus. Weekly early evening hours especially needed.

ADULT SERVICES:
• Adult Programming – Present programs of interest to the public, including “how-to” classes such as painting, woodworking, etc.
• Display Case Maintenance – Assist in planning, scheduling, and designing display cases.
• EMOS Assistance – (Ongoing) Aid with the selection of reading materials from the library collection for home-bound or citizens housed in assisted living homes on a weekly basis.
• Inventory Maintenance – (Ongoing) Assist with inventory of the adult library collections by checking off each title that is present on the shelf from a computer-generated list that provides the title, author and call number of each item.
• Shelf Maintenance - (Ongoing) Read shelves by placing library materials in Dewey Decimal order or alphabetically by the author’s name or as per collection specifics and dust shelves.
• Shelver – (Ongoing) Sort, shelve or file library materials (books, audio and video materials, magazines) one day per week for two hours.

CHILDREN SERVICES:
• After School Special Assistance – (Ongoing) Need enthusiastic, reliable adults to help supervise and interact with an average of 50 grade school children each Thursday from 3:00 to 4:30. This individual would help with craft stations, be a guest reader, help with crowd control and be an extra pair of hands for activities.
• Craft Preparation – (Ongoing) Need careful, detail-oriented individual who is a self-starter to help with creation of programming crafts and educational manipulative. A commitment of two hours at the beginning of the week to get prepared for Storytimes is desired. Lots of cut and pasting, laminating, photo-copying is involved so manual dexterity is required. Some filing of programming materials in notebooks is included.
• Inventory Maintenance – (Ongoing) Need detail-oriented, thorough individual to assist with inventory of children's collection once a week for two hours at time when convenient. This project is a valuable way to get to know the collection, help put books in order and check for lost/missing items from a computer generated list.
• Programming Assistance – Annual/Special Events
Harvest Party – Serve refreshments, decorate and set up, make crafts, serve as storyteller and other duties as need for this annual event held the 2nd week in October for the two hour event.
Munch-a-Buncha Books - Week long spring break art appreciation program three hours daily. Involves serving lunch, sharing books on the Art Masters, and assisting with related art projects.
Princess/Knight Party – Help with serving food, preparing crafts and operating game stations.
Summer Reading Carnival Assistance –
Run games, general crowd control, and other activities required for a successful carnival, which is held on the 2nd Thursday each July for three hours.
Summer Reading Club Craft Assistance – Help prepare materials and assist children with craft projects each Tuesday in June and July. One morning and one afternoon session to choose.
• Weekly After School Special – (Ongoing) Assist with crowd control, help children with crafts, pull books for display to coordinate with programming, and any other assistance needed.

GENEALOGY SERVICES:
• Beginning Genealogist Assistance – (Ongoing) Greet patrons using the Genealogy Center for the first time, ascertain their information needs, and give instructions on the basic beginning steps of genealogy research.
• Collection Upkeep – (Ongoing) Ensure the genealogy collections are in proper order by reading call numbers of materials in open, closed and storage areas.
• Digitization – (Ongoing) Scan photos to electronic database, manipulate the images and appropriately name the document.
• Indexing – (Ongoing) Read through materials, documenting key pieces of information and arranging information in alphabetical order for index.
• Material Preservation and Maintenance – (Ongoing) Repair, recover, secure label, and preserve archival items.
• Microfilm Extraction – (Ongoing) Create a hard copy of information found on various rolls of microfilm and compile a complete index of extracted materials.
• Microfilming – (Ongoing) Assist with the duty of preserving fragile paper records into a more accessible, durable form by using a microfilm camera to take pictures of materials.
• Photocopying – (Ongoing) Photocopy genealogy/local history materials to either replace an original or to copy an item that we have borrowed from other institutions to replicate and return.
• Transcription – Transfer documents in handwritten form to typed format.
• Vertical File Development and Maintenance – (Ongoing) Create file folders and identification labels for materials for staff to catalog by subject headings and maintain and update materials.

TECHNICAL SERVICES:
• Materials Maintenance - (Ongoing) Label, tape, cover, recover, and repair library materials.
• Material Cleaning – (Ongoing) Wash the outside covers of books and audiobooks while socializing with other volunteers.

TEEN SERVICES:
• Chaperone for Teen Programming – Assist staff with preparing for and conducting programs specifically created for teens.
• Teen Services Assistance - (Ongoing) – Greet teen patrons and assist with location of items and resources, assist Teen services staff with a variety of duties such as computer aid, shelving of materials, homework help, introduction to gaming devices, etc.
