The Groundbreading Ceremony for the new Fleming County Library was held Sunday , April 2, 2006 at 2:00 p.m. at 202 Bypass Boulevard. Connie Saunders, Debbie Crump, and Brigitte McCleese registered approximately 150 guests, and ushered them to reserved seating.
Master of Ceremonies was Board Chair, Steve Kelly. Inrtroducing guests were Carol Rolph, Vice-Chair, Chris Beckham, Secretary James Lewis, Treasurer, and Olivia Overbey, member.
Also on the podium were Judge Executive Larry Foxworthy, Rep. Mike Denham, Sen. Walter Blevins, and Director Beverly Cooper.
KDLA Construction Spcialist Chris Bischoff, Rep. Mike Denham, Sen. Walter Blevins, Judith Gibbons, Chris Bischoff, Ofivia Overbey, Carol Rolph, Louie Flannery, James LewisJudge Larry Foxworthy, Chamber of Commerce Mary Jo Litton, and Beverly Cooper used the golden shovels to officially break ground.
Members of the VFW and American Legion perofrmed and impressive flag ceremony as Daniel Wesley sang the National ANthem. Members of Sheila Marshall's Tri-M Club performed various selections before and after the ceremony.
Past board members and library directors were recognized for their efforts to build and maintain library services for FC.
Members of the Library 2000 Campaign were also recognized for their efforts to secure funding for the new building.
Praises went to the Teen Advisory Group and Construction Advisory Committee for helping program chair Mary Rushing make the ceremony a memorable occasion.
Young people from the library's children's programs used golden spades with balloons tied on them to dig several significant holes in the areas designated as children's services.
Several people who have never been on the bookmobile climbed aboard to see what Barb Faris delivers to school children, shut ins, and rural patrons.
Thanks to all in the community who helped in any way to make this a special day.
New bids are expected to be open in middle May, with construction beginning soon after.
