Ages 3-6. Beautiful full-color photographs of wildlife in winter are the main attraction of this short picture book. Though the first two pictures show children with sled and snowman, the lens quickly turns to owl, coyote, cardinal, rabbit, deer, moose, weasel, and other North American animals in the wild. Mangelsen's photos convey the crispness and the quiet of a day in a snow-covered landscape, while Hirschi's brief, poetic text indicates how cold weather affects the animals. Not a first purchase, perhaps, but a good choice where preschool and primary-grade teachers seek resources on the subject. ~--Carolyn Phelan

PreS-Gr 3-- Beautiful full-color photographs record the changes that occur in the natural world with each season. Hirschi's spare poetic prose is clear and unforced throughout. The titles have parallel sequences, both photographic and textual, highlighting what is unique to each season by placing many of the same animals and landscapes in both books. An attractive design, large typeface, decorative initials, and just a few lines per page all add to the books' appeal. Their texts seamlessly bind together the sharp photos in a meaningful way; one-page afterwords further amplify the texts. Mangelsen's ``knee high'' approach with the lens compliments young children, whose world is much lower to the ground than an adult's. --Gloria Amann, New York Public Library (c) Copyright 2010. Fiction: NF Age: K-3 Two brief, evocative photo essays introduce the seasons of winter and spring. Concentrating primarily on animal behavior, Hirschi also explores some changes in plant life.
