CIRCULATION POLICIES

Materials are circulated to patrons in good standing. Patrons must present their library card to check out materials Patrons with a valid library card and in good standing may check out the following materials:

Books:
  • Twenty five (25) books per card for a 3 week period
  • Books may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks if there is not a waiting list for them or if they are not more than seven (7) days overdue; renewals may be made in person, online, or by phone
  • Reference books and Genealogy materials do not circulate
  • Fine for the late return of books is $.10 per book per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per book
  • The replacement cost plus a processing fee of $10.00 will be charged for any lost or damaged books
Magazines & Newspapers:
  • Ten (10) magazines per card for a 3 week period
  • Magazines may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks if there is not a waiting list for them or if they are not more than seven (7) days overdue; renewals may be made in person, online, or by phone
  • The current issue of all magazines does not circulate
  • Fine for the late return of magazines is $.10 per magazine per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per magazine
  • The replacement cost plus a processing fee of $5.00 will be charged for any lost or damaged magazines
  • Newspapers do not circulate
Audio Materials:
  • Popular Audios (Fiction, Bestsellers, etc.):
    • Ten (10) audio books per card for a 3 week period
    • Popular audio books may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks if there is not a waiting list for them or they are not more than seven (7) days overdue; renewals may be made in person, online, or by phone
    • Popular audio books may be placed on reserve
    • Fine for the late return of audio books is $.10 per audio book per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per audio book
    • The replacement cost plus a processing fee of $10.00 will be charged for any lost or damaged audio books
  • Nonfiction Audios (How-to’s, History, Language instruction, etc.):
    • Ten (10) nonfiction audio books for a two (2) week period
    • Nonfiction audio books may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks if there is not a waiting list for them or if they are not more than seven (7) days overdue; renewals may be made in person, online, or by phone
    • Fine for the late return of nonfiction audio books is $.10 per audio book per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per audio book
    • The replacement cost plus a processing fee of $10.00 will be charged for any lost or damaged books
Videos:
  • Popular videos:
    • Five (5) popular videos per patron for a 5 day period to those patrons age 17 or older
    • Popular videos may not be renewed or reserved
    • Fine for the late return of popular videos is $1.00 per video per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per video
  • Children’s Videos:
    • Five (5) children’s videos per patron for a 5 day period
    • Children’s videos may not be renewed or reserved
    • The fine for the late return of Children’s Videos is $1.00 per video per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per video
  • Nonfiction videos:
    • Five (5) nonfiction videos per patron for a 3 week period
    • Nonfiction videos may be renewed once for an additional 3 weeks if there is not a waiting list or if they are not more than seven (7) days overdue. Renewal can be done in person, online, or by phone
    • Fine for the late return of nonfiction videos is $.10 per video per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per nonfiction video
Special Collections:
  • Genealogy: Materials from the Genealogy Room do not circulate
  • Reference: Materials from the Reference Collection do not circulate
  • list
    • Kits: One (1) kit per patron age 16 and older for a 3 week period
    • Parenting Resource Center Kits may be reserved
    • Fine for the late return of a Parenting Resource Center kit is $1.00 per kit per day late to a maximum fine of $10.00 per kit
  • Teacher’s Collections: Teachers in Jasper and Dubois County may check out a “Teacher’s Collection” of up to 25 items for a 3 week period
    • Proof of teaching status in the county will be required
    • Teachers who live in Jasper/Dubois County, but teach out of the county may check out a Teacher’s Collection
    • Teachers who live and work outside of Jasper and Dubois County must first purchase a nonresident and/or PLAC card in order to check out a Teacher’s Collection
    • The fine for the late return of a Teacher’s Collection will be $5.00 per collection per day late
    • Teacher’s Collections may be renewed twice for an additional 3 weeks each time
    • Each teacher is responsible for any and all materials checked out in the Teacher’s Collection and for returning the entire collection intact and on time. Items missing from the collection when returned will result in the suspension of borrowing privileges until all outstanding fines are paid and all items are returned and/or paid for
  • Interlibrary Loans (ILL): Materials not found in the Library’s collection may be borrowed from another library through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) according to the following guidelines:
    • Patrons age 16 years and older with a valid library card may request a maximum of 5 items per month per person for a 3 week period
    • ILL’s may be renewed one time if approved by the lending library
    • Fine for the late return of an ILL is $1.00 per day late per item to a maximum fine of $10.00
    • Patron is responsible for replacement cost of lost or damaged materials plus service charge and accrued fines
    • All charges from the lending library will be passed on to the patron
    • Books published within the last six (6) months may not be borrowed
    • First 20 pages of copying is free; $.10 per page for over 20 pages
    • Failure to pick up 3 requested ILL items will result in loss of ILL privileges for six (6) months
Reserves:
  • Patrons may place a reserve/hold on most materials that are checked out by another patron. The exceptions are Popular and Children’s videos which may not be reserved
  • Library staff will notify patrons via a telephone call when their reserved item is available. Every attempt will be made to talk to the patron who reserved the material, however, the Library cannot be responsible for messages not received
  • Reserved materials will be held on the reserve shelf for a maximum of three (3) days, not including days closed. If the reserved material is not picked up within the specified time period, it will be held for the next person on the list or returned to the collection
Overdues/Fines & Fees:
  • The library sends overdue notices as a courtesy to our patrons. Failure to receive an overdue notice does not excuse any fines or fees
  • Each patron is responsible for any and all materials checked out on their library card and for returning materials on time
  • Parents/guardians are responsible for the fines and overdue materials of their minor children (under 18 years of age)
  • Patrons who have an item seven (7) or more days overdue will have their borrowing privileges suspended until the overdue item is returned or paid for
  • Patrons who have an outstanding fine of $10.00 or more will have their library privileges suspended until the outstanding fine is paid
  • Failure to return library materials and/or pay outstanding fines and fees may result in the account being submitted to a collection agency. Any and all fees associated with the collection agency will be the responsibility of the delinquent patron.
  • Parents/guardians of minor children (under age 18) with overdue materials and/or outstanding fines will have their (parent/guardian) library privileges suspended until the overdue items checked out by their children are returned and/or the outstanding fine is paid
  • Patrons who pay for a lost item, then find it, may receive a refund of the cost of the item, but not the processing fee, if they return the item, with their receipt for payment, within 6 months of the payment
  • The Library does not accept replacement books in lieu of payment
  • The Library does not allow patrons to “work off” fines and fees
  • The following fees will be accessed for:
    • Overdue books, magazines, nonfiction
      audios, nonfiction videos
      $.10 per day per item
    • Popular and Children’s Videos$1.00 per day per video
    • Interlibrary Loans$1.00 per day per item
    • Teacher’s Collections$5.00 per day per collection
    • Kits$1.00 per day per kit
    • Missing or damaged hardback book,
      video, audio book
      cost of item or $30.00
    • Missing or damaged paperback bookcost of item or $7.00
    • Missing or damaged trade paperbackcost of item or $15.00
    • Missing or damaged book jacket$5.00
    • Missing or damaged video or audio case or insert$5.00
    • Missing or damaged magazinecost of item or $5.00
