November in the Library
Ask
not what your country can do for you -- ask what you can do for your country.
~
John F. Kennedy
Our
character virtue for the month of November is Citizenship and Courage, both
wonderful topics for lessons this month in the Library as we host a Veterans
Day ceremony here at LCDS on Wednesday, November 11. In our older grades we will read from the
book The Hero’s Trail: A
Guide for a Heroic Life by T.A. Barron to understand the difference between
a hero
and a celebrity, and we will work on our own definition of a hero. In our younger grades, we will use the
election season to discuss citizenship. See How They Run (Susan Goodman), Duck for President (Doreen Cronin), and Otto Runs for President (Rosemary Wells)
are a few of the titles read in Library to encourage discussion about civic
duty and the election process.
We
will also take time to talk about the tradition of the Thanksgiving holiday and
how it came to be declared a national holiday.
On
November 17, the Virginia Historical Society out of Richmond will visit the 5th Grade
in the Library to present the program Virginia
at the Turn of the Century: Teaching with Photos, a wonderful introduction
to primary sources and what we can learn from them. The program coincides nicely with the time
period the students are beginning to study with Mrs. Carr in history class.
Second
grade classes will have a special visit from Barbara Reese on November 24. Mrs. Reese will lead the students in two
hands-on activities related to colonial toys and colonial chores.
Our
arrival back at school after the Thanksgiving holiday will see the return of
the ever popular Scholastic Book Fair. I
look forward to seeing you all there.
Please let me know if you would like to volunteer for a shift on the
checkout table or with helping the children to write out their Wish Lists.
November
is going to fly by! I wish you all a
Happy Thanksgiving and safe travels if you are visiting family.
Best
wishes,
Mrs. Kelahan
