Genealogical Organizations

Virginia Genealogical Society
Organized in 1960 to foster interest in genealogical, biographical, historical and heraldic research; to publish information pertaining to genealogy; and to share genealogical methods, techniques and knowledge among the members of the Society. The Society does not maintain a research facility, but membership includes quarterly publications filled with news and updates concerning Virginia genealogy.

South Central Virginia Genealogical Society
The society was  organized in 1999. It servs Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Cumberland, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway, Pittsylvania, and Prince Edward Counties.

Virginia Historial Society
Membership includes subscription to VHS publications, special invitations, discounts in the museum shop, and free admission to exhibits and the research library. The Historical Society houses numerous materials helpful to genealogists such as genealogical notes and charts, family papers, Bible records, county histories, and census records. These are in closed stacks. This means that researchers must fill out call slips in order to request and examine materials from the library collections
