Greenawalt Library Statement Concerning Confidentiality and Privacy

The Greenawalt Library respects the privacy of all who use our services, and we are committed to the following privacy policy. If you have any questions or concerns about this policy, please contact the Director of Library Services.

Our policies are compatible with the American Library Association’s Code of Ethics, Point III, which states, “ We protect each library user's right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and resources consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted.”

We also adhere to Minnesota Statute 13.40, Subd. 2, which reads in part, “ (b) the following data maintained by a library are private data on individuals and may not be disclosed for other than library purposes except pursuant to a court order:

  1. data that link a library patron’s name with materials requested or borrowed by the patron or that link a patron’s name with a specific subject about which the patron has requested information or materials.”

The following information is gathered automatically whenever you visit our website. It does not identify you personally.

  • Internet domain (ending in .edu, .com, .org, etc.);

  • The type of browser and operating system used;

  • The date and time you accessed our site;

  • The pages you visited;

  • The URL you used that linked you to our website, if applicable.

This information is used only for tracking number of visitors and reporting on the type of technology used.

Some Web sites (such as MEDLINEplus or WholehealthMD) provide links to other Internet sites that provide health information. Should you link to another site, you are then subject to the privacy policy of the new site.

NOTE: Although Greenawalt Library makes every effort to protect your privacy through implementation of state privacy laws and local practice, under the federal USA PATRIOT Act (Public Law 107-56), records of your library activities (including materials you borrow and your computer workstation usage) may be obtained by federal agents. That federal law prohibits library workers from informing you (or others) if federal agents have obtained records about you.
