We are now able to offer Wi-Fi hotspots! Users (ages 18 and older) with a Portland Public Library card that has been active for at least 30 days may borrow a FREE hotspot. The loan period for hotspots is 7 days, and if there is no wait list, they may be renewed for an additional 7-day period. Hotspot holds and check-outs are limited to one per household. Children’s Programs


LAPSIT – FOR KIDS UNDER 3 (Friday mornings at 10:30am)


These are programs for infants and toddlers under age 3 and their caregivers (older siblings are allowed to attend/participate when necessary). The program lasts around 30 minutes. It includes books/stories, lots of songs, nursery rhymes, and fingerplays. This month all themes start with the letter “C”.


December 2nd - Cats & Kittens!  Stories, rhymes, songs, and a sticker page.  


December 9th - Cookies (We know how Santa loves them!). Stories & songs.   


December 16th - Christmas Stories featuring Santa & reindeer.    


December 23rd - NO LAPSIT (library closed for Christmas)     


December 30th - Celebrate New Years & the Library’s birthday!        

PRESCHOOL STORYTIME for 3 to 5 year olds (Wednesday mornings at 10:30am)


For Preschool, the December theme is “The Portland Library is 75 years old. Celebrate with us!”


December 7th - Letter writing day! We’ll talk about sending messages in a bottle, writing Santa, and then make our own letter or card.


December 14th - “Ocean” holiday! Featuring holiday books with narwhals and penguins.


December 21st - Christmas stories (not religious), music, movement, and make a holiday ornament.


December 28th - Let’s celebrate The Library’s 75th birthday! Birthday books, facts, games, and cupcake with a candle.



***Read to a Dog: December 7th from 2:30 till 4:30pm - Sign up is required. Please call us at 615-325-2279 to schedule.



AFTERSCHOOL PROGRAM for Kindergarten & older (Wednesday Afternoons at 3:30pm)

December 7th - Guest Reader, Mr. Chip Arnold, shares his favorite Christmas books.


December 14th - December 2 – STEAM Program: Makey-Makey turning objects into touch pads.


Decemer 21st - It’s Winter solstice! Learn about it, and follow up at home with a solstice activity. Plus holiday stories and ornaments.


December 28th - We’re celebrating the 75th birthday of the Portland Library with cupcakes and candles!


***Family Movie Matinee: December 17th 10:00 – 12:00 - Join us for a screening of Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. A light snack and water will be served



Fellowship of the Teens for Middle and High Schoolers (Thursdays 4:00-5:00 pm)

December 1st - Explore Canva


We’re taking over the computer lab and learning how to use canva.com. We’ll learn how to create our own stickers and posters.

December 8th - Bingo


Join us in the community room to play Bingo. Everyone walks away with one prize or more!


December 15th - American Sign Language


Learn about deaf culture and common ASL signs using Transparent Language through tntel.info.


December 22nd - Tech Day


Use our 3D doodlers, robots, Nintendo Switch, and Glowforge.


December 29th - Game Day ***Special time: 3-5pm


Play some of your favorite card games. Hot beverages will be provided.






Every Tuesday @ 1:00 in the Community Room - Join in the fun of friendly competition as Ms. Vicki calls out the numbers, and the race is on to yell out “BINGO.” There will be candy and snack prizes for the winner. The last game of the day is the “Cover All” where the winner walks away with a gift card that can be used locally. 


Genealogy Club


Saturday, December 3rd @ 10:00am in the community room - Join Ms. Paula this month to discuss Christmas traditions, do a paper puzzle, and have a Christmas treat.


Veteran’s Representative


Wednesday, December 7th 1:00 to 3:00 in a Study Room - Ms. Rebecca from the Sumner County Veteran’s Service Office will be available to help any veteran or veteran’s spouse with questions or filling out of forms. No appointment necessary. First come, first serve basis.


Page Turners Book Club


Thursday, December 15th 11:30 - 1:00pm in the Community Room - Ms. Patricia leads this group of book readers in a discussion of this month’s chosen book, “The Gift of the Magi” and other stories by O. Henry. This holiday classic was first published in 1905.


Adult Make and Take Craft Time


Tuesday, December 20th, 2:30 - 3:30pm in the Community Room - Sign up to make a craft with us this month. There is a limit of 10 on a first come basis. This month’s craft will feature Ms. Kim making cards.


Join us to celebrate the Library’s 75th Anniversary on December 30th from 3-7pm with guest speakers at 5pm.
