Atty's parents forbade her to see Cole, the boy who lives below her with his drug-addicted mother. But they are drawn together by their love for astronomy, and they both know that the only way they can be together is by running away. However, their getaway isn't as easy as they both planned, riddled with mistakes and tragic accidents. To truly keep their relationship alive, they'll have to outrun their past. Told in reverse order through Atty's journal entries, the story holds readers in suspense as it relays heartbreaking details of Atty and Cole's catastrophic relationship. The novel's structure is what makes the story unique, transforming the predictable plotline into something more suspenseful. Olson artfully takes her readers on an emotional roller coaster, tackling difficult issues with grace. She also presents a racially diverse relationship (Atty is Haitian American, Cole is white) without solely focusing on their problems as a biracial couple. Readers looking for an exciting and emotionally charged romance will thoroughly enjoy this one.--Shepard, Amanda Copyright 2018 Booklist

This tragic love story begins with a suicide and ends with the beginning of first romance. Presented in reverse chronological order, Atty's diary entries reveal the tense circumstances that led her to run away with her boyfriend, her burgeoning love of electronic dance music, and--sadly--the guileless younger teen she once was. The reverse structure is inventive but more awkward than effective. (c) Copyright 2018. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
