Anna Kate Callow has big plans, but they are interrupted by the death of her Granny Zee, which has her returning to Wicklow, Alabama, to run Granny Zee's beloved Blackbird Café. The blackbird pie served there is purported to allow the dead to convey messages to the living, but Granny Zee didn't tell Anna Kate the secret ingredient, so her pies, while delicious, are supernatural duds. Natalie Linden Walker has also returned to Wicklow, where she and her daughter live with Natalie's overbearing mother and kindly father. The Callows and the Lindens are sworn enemies, thanks to an accident that killed Natalie's older brother and forced Anna Kate's mother out of Wicklow for good. Natalie, looking for a reconciliation, delves into the truth behind the accident, which leads to some uncomfortable truths about her own upbringing. Webber infuses her charming Southern small-town tale with lighthearted magic and gentle humor, and the cast of supporting characters adds to the quirky fun.
