Paramedic Zoe Chambers is called to a farm in rural Pennsylvania, where she finds a farmer's body hanging from the rafters of his barn. It looks like a suicide people said that he was dying of lung cancer but things don't add up. As Zoe digs deeper, she finds links to two deaths that occurred 45 years ago, but the locals are tight-lipped. Even Zoe's mother and stepfather, why may know something about the case, are refusing to talk about it. The situation prompts Zoe to wonder about her own past: did her father really die in an automobile accident when she was eight years old? When two more people die, it's clear that Zoe and her family are in danger. Meanwhile, Zoe attempts to sort out her relationship with Police Chief Pete Adams. Readers will enjoy the vividly evoked rural setting and the complex plot. This is a good choice for readers who like their village crime not all that cozy.
