Ruby Glick comes to Birch Creek to live with her brother and his family while looking for a husband. She is at loose ends, having struggled with mishaps in the past. Her brother is wary of having her live with his family, but his wife encourages her to discover meaningful work and to socialize. Teacher Christian Ropp enjoys his work, though he struggles to find his place in the community. He and Ruby become friends, and she discovers that she also enjoys working with children. When they decide to help each other find marriage partners, they soon fall in love.
