K-Gr 3-The town of Punctuation Junction is filled with punctuation marks doing their jobs and getting along-except for when they don't. What happens when all the apostrophes float away, or the parentheses decide to add too much information to everyday objects, or the colons go missing? The superhero punctuation marks are called in to save the day, of course. This series stars not only marks such as commas, periods, question marks, and exclamation points, but also the more exotic colons and parentheses. Readers can test their punctuation knowledge at the end of the book with an activity. More information about the punctuation mark can be found at the back of the book. These introductions are not as well done as many extant grammar books, but they may draw in some children with the superhero theme. (c) Copyright 2012. A low-interest topic (punctuation) and a high-interest topic (superheroes) combine in an effort to engage kids in the rules of grammar. This title in the PunctuationBooks series features an apostrophe-shaped cartoon superhero named Super A who tells a silly story and, in the process, explains the proper use of contractions and possession. At Pencil Elementary, apostrophes have started drifting upwards and commas are taking their place unsuccessfully ( That,s nice doesn't cut it). Midway through the action, there's a pause for a lesson: we learn that apostrophes are punctuation marks who love to float and see examples. Once the apostrophes have been recovered, kids are asked to add apostrophes to eight lively sentences in an exercise called Punctuation Fun. An oxymoron? Kids will have to be the judge of that one.--Kelley, Ann Copyright 2010 Booklist
