The first library card is free, and Tom Green County Library only requires that card holders live in the state of Texas. Adults seeking library cards must present an acceptable proof of address and picture identification, such as a driver’s license or state issued identification card. Examples of acceptable proofs of address are recently postmarked mail that is not hand-addressed, rental agreement or receipt with name and current address, personal check with name and current address, bill with name and current address, automobile registration. Patrons are responsible for notifying the library of any change of name, address, or phone number.
Unacceptable forms of identification include birth certificates, ID with Post Office Box as address, expired driver’s license, Xerox copy of driver’s license or ID card.
No cards will be issued without proper identification.
Card applicants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian with proper identification and proof of address in order to be issued a library card. Both the child and parent must sign the card. If a child cannot write his name, the parent may write it on the card for him/her. Parents and legal guardians are responsible for all materials on the child’s card.
Groups from school may take home paper applications for parents and guardians to fill out and return. The library will issue a card to the student presenting a completed application. The card may be used on the day it is issued; however, before the card can be used on a subsequent visit the parent or guardian must sign the back of the card.
Senior Citizens: A card may be converted to a senior citizen’s card once the card holder reaches 60 years of age. Senior’s cards do not accrue fines; however, seniors are still responsible for lost or damaged items.
Military personnel and college students should give their “permanent home of record” address for a reference.
Jail trustees must show an identification card. A block is placed on their card that shows that they may only check out from the paperback collection. Once they can show proof that they are no longer incarcerated and have proof of a permanent address, the library card will be converted to a regular borrower’s card.
Persons renting from the Salvation Army facility on Gillis must show identification. A block is placed on their record indicating that they may only check items out from the paperback collection. Once proof of a permanent address is established, the library card will be converted to a regular borrower’s card.
Concho Valley Home for Girls residents should record the address of the home as well as a second address, such as that of their parents.
Women’s Shelter: Women residing in the shelter and who are unable to provide proof of identification may be issued an Internet Only card. A letter from shelter personnel is required, and the card will expire (but may be renewed) at three months. Once proper identification is obtained, the card may be converted to a regular borrower’s card.
Internet Only Card: A card may be issued for Internet use only when the patron presents proper identification.
