Living History: Joseph Priestly
Joseph Priestley was an 18th-century clergyman, philosopher, and scientist who discovered the existence of oxygen during chemistry experiments with air. Because of political and religious persecution, in 1794 Priestley moved from England to Northumberland County Pennsylvania, where he continued his experiments. On Thurs., Nov. 12, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Ronald C. Blatchley will portray Joseph Priestley in period costume and perform some 18th-century chemistry experiments during a free public program at the West End Library. Blatchley, a long-time chemistry teacher, has portrayed Priestley during living history presentations in the U.S., Canada, and England for more than 25 years. Register to attend so that seating can be arranged by calling 922-4773 or by visiting the library at 45 Ball Park Road in Laurelton.
