SULLIVAN COUNTY BOCES SCHOOL LIBRARY SYSTEM

COOPERATIVE COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT PLAN

THE DEFINITION OF COOPERATIVE COLLECTION:

Cooperative Collection Development (CCD) is the acquisition and maintenance, allocation and sharing of specialized collections that benefit participating member libraries. The specialized collections will be shared through the interlibrary loan network.

THE PLAN DEVELOPMENT:

The Sullivan County BOCES School Library System (SSLS) has developed a Cooperative Collection Development Plan with its member libraries in accordance with the Commissioner’s Regulations for Education section 90.18(c)(1).

GOALS OF THE CCD PROGRAM:

• To share resources in an effort to promote cost-effective collection development

• To share resources necessary for research and make available to all participating school libraries, students and teachers

• To broaden the depth of special collections • To insure the availability of unique and unusual materials that may be too expensive for one library to purchase

• To conserve on shelving space through coordinated planning

OBJECTIVES OF THE CCD PROGRAM:

• To promote the purchase of print, non-print, and digital materials

• To use curriculum based criteria such as The American Association of School Librarians’ Standards for the 21st Century-Learner and Partnership for 21st Century Skills as a guide for CCD purchases

• To inform administrators, teachers and fellow librarians of shared resources available through the School Library System’s Cooperative Collection Development

 

SHARED RESPONSIBILITES OF THE CCD PROGRAM:

The SSLS Council, comprised of members and the SLS Director, will:

• Oversee the maintenance of the CCD Program

• Evaluate the CCD program periodically

• Prioritize grant requests from individual school districts

• Uphold the purpose of creating/ maintaining specialized collections for each school library

• Act as a “materials selection review committee” for grant requested CCD monies

• Monitor the information dissemination of the CCD purchases eg. On the Sullivan SLS’ website; to school districts via email, conversations

• Promote the purpose and cause of the CCD Program in the school building The

 

Special Collections’ Librarians will:

• Conduct a collection analysis to identify strengths/weaknesses of the school library’s collection

• Submit “Application for CCD Grant”

• Continue to develop and maintain high quality, timely and relevant CCD resource collections utilizing professional literature and Staff recommendations

• Commit to spending local funds toward the CCD Program

• Use CCD resources; maintain and weed collection as needed and notify the School Library System of any change within the collection

• Promote the purpose and cause of the CCD Program in the school building

• Share CCD resources among member libraries

• Notify the School Library System if unable to meet the requirements of the CCD Plan

 

SHARED RESPONSIBILITES OF THE CCD PROGRAM (continued):

The School Library System will:

• Be a resource in purchasing materials for CCD collections

• Complete all clerical duties of the order process

• Process new CCD materials with “SSLS” labels

• Track CCD purchases and locations

• Provide information about the CCD Plan and Grants to SLS Council and Liaisons

• Coordinate with the CCD Committee, in recommending new holding libraries and special collections

• Collect usage statistics for the CCD special collection

• Update SEAL Union Catalog

• Evaluate the CCD Plan periodically Funding:

• Grants will be available annually for existing and newly recommended special collections

• Grants will be determined by the availability of funds in the School Library System’s Budget

• Librarian will support Grant request by identifying curriculum connections

• Council and School Library System Director will review proposals

 

CCD Purchasing Guidelines:

• Books

• Digitized Books

• Specialized encyclopedias and unique reference sources

• Non-print materials

• Digitized video
