Mountainburg Youth Services Assistant

Summary: We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative, and outgoing youth services library assistant at the Mountainburg Public Library.

 

Duties and Responsibilities (non-exhaustive):

  • Plan, promote and present programs, to include:
    • Annual Summer Reading Program
    • Weekly story times
    • Seasonal programs
    • Teen and tween programs
    • Developing new initiatives individually and collaboratively with the other Crawford County libraries and in partnership with members of the Mountainburg community
  • Attend the State Summer Program Workshop in March of each year and other related workshops as they become available
  • Keep statistics on attendance, et cetera, of children’s and teen programs and general library activities
  • Perform front desk duties, such as: charging, discharging, and renewing items on borrowers’ records at their request
  • Serve patrons needs with material selection, reference and research services, reader’s advisory, and special programs.  Assist with collection development, weeding and inventory as needed
  • Perform opening and closing duties
  • Inspect items checked in for personal items, damages, and unwanted pests
  • Maintain patron and staff safety
  • Protect library property from damage
  • Work with Branch Director and other County staff to help improve library services and keep the libraries valuable to the community
  • Educate patrons to use databases and other resources offered by the library
  • Record statistics make copies, maintain supplies, process and sort new materials and donations, maintain and plan special displays, perform light housekeeping, and help maintain the physical appearance of the library
  • Receive money that is collected by the library and turn in to Branch Director or Friends Treasurer
  • Shelve and retrieve materials, register new library patrons, and maintain patron records
  • Shelf-read, assist with weeding, and maintenance of collection
  • Assist with interlibrary loan materials, and notify patrons when requested materials become available
  • Answer and route telephone calls
  • Provide computer assistance and technical support
  • Enforce library and patron policies
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Requirements:

  • Interested in working with children and in building literacy
  • Experience with children and youth library programming preferred
  • Relate to children and teens well
  • Great customer service skills
  • Familiarity and comfort in using social media
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and have full range of motion sufficient to shelve on 8-foot shelving
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills with staff and patrons
  • General or better digital literacy skills
  • Thoroughness, attention to detail, and dedication
  • A high school diploma or GED is required, college degree and library experience preferred

 

Schedule:

  • Full-time
  • 40 hours/week
  • Somewhat flexible, and includes working until 6:30 p.m. on Wednesdays and 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturdays
