Katelyn has been taking care of her widowed mother-in-law, Shirley, for the past three years. Shirley has a habit of using her daughter-in-law as a punching bag, and Katelyn has become a pro at taking the abuse. When Katelyn's always-traveling-for-work husband asks for a divorce, it looks like Shirley won't be Katelyn's problem anymore, but the reality is far more nuanced. With her kids away for the summer and ready to start college in the fall, Katelyn is seemingly free to do what she wants for the first time in a long time. So she decides to visit her mother and the small town in Texas where she grew up and couldn't wait to get away from. Alas, her heart is too big to leave Shirley behind, so a road trip ensues and a fish-out-of-water story begins as high-society Shirley adjusts to small-town life. As Shirley acclimates, Katelyn starts to realize how much she gave up in her search for a better life. VERDICT With engaging characters and a fast-moving plot, this latest from Thomas ("Cash Brothers" series; The Promise of Forgiveness) will please fans of women's fiction with family drama and midlife transformation.-Karen Core, Detroit P.L. © Copyright 2017.
