The Floor of the Sky
In this beautifully rendered paean to the land, Toby Jenkins is 72 and has lived all her life in the ornate Sears Roebuck farmhouse in the Sandhills of Nebraska that her father bought back in 1920. Now, despite the local banker’s pressure for her sell, she remains there with her crabby, self-righteous sister. When Lila, her 16-year-old pregnant grand-daughter comes to stay with them for the summer, the unloved, surly, metal-studded girl resents everyone. Eventually, the girl’s curiosity about her grandmother, her family’s history, entanglements, and local rituals wins her over, and she becomes as bonded to Toby as her grandmother is to the beauty and meaning of the ranch on which she lives.

An Arsonist’s Guide to Writers’ Homes in New England Sam Pulsifer has just emerged from prison after spending 10 years there for accidentally burning Emily Dickinson’s house to the ground and unwittingly killing 2 people in the blaze. Now, as he rebuilds his life—new job, new identity, marriage and children-- someone else has vengeance on their minds and he finds himself blamed for the arson of several other famous writers’ homes. He sets out to prove his innocence, but discovers more about himself and his family’s secrets than he ever suspected. This novel, disguised as memoir, is hilarious and heartbreaking, about truth and honesty and the damage they can do.

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay Ever wonder how American comic books got their start? In this brilliant, sweeping epic novel, Chabon introduces Sammy Clay, a Brooklyn-born kid with plenty of ideas for superheroes in the burgeoning comic book industry and his cousin, Joe Kavalier, a trained escape artist from Prague, as well as an inventive illustrator. They come together to write one of the most inspiring, mysterious comic books to come down the pike. They create The Escapist, and then the Luna Moth, just as the shadow of Hilter is falling across Europe and Joe is desperately trying to bring what is left of his family to America |

The Outlander Just 19 years old, Mary Boulton has become a widow, and her husband’s killer. As she flees to the West in 1903, she is pursued by her vengeful, bloodthirsty brothers-in-law, and as she goes, is tormented by mad visions, by her desperate plight and by how little her upbringing has prepared her for life. With the stunning prose and captivating mood reminiscent of Frazier’s “Cold Mountain,” Adamson weds brilliant style to this gripping tale of one woman’s desperate escape into the wilds and of the surprising characters she meets who take an interest in her plight.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society “Traditional without being stale, and romantic without being naïve”… this lovely story unfolds in a series of letters from a London journalist who discovers the role a small island off the coast of England played in World War II. The unforgettable people of Guernsey charm Juliet Ashton through their letters in return, describing the Nazi occupation of their island. Each of their stories weave together with her research to create the picture of how their odd literary society came into being. A novel that “affirms the power of books to nourish people during hard times.”
