"Character Sketches" is back for its 4th year! The theme for 2021 is "Award Winners."

Cedar City Library gives special thanks to our primary costumers Janice Ruesch and Debbie Grimm for their hours of free service to this program from April 2018 through early 2021. We recognize the continued efforts of Debbie Grimm who assumed nearly full responsibility in 2021 (while Janice is engaged in a period of full-time service to the church to which she belongs).We also thank the Parowan Community Theater and Parowan High School from which most costumes are borrowed.

Harold Maurice Abrahams CBE (15 December 1899 – 14 January 1978)[3] was an English track and field athlete. He was Olympic champion in 1924 in the 100 metres sprint, a feat depicted in the 1981 film Chariots of Fire.

A child prodigy, Mozart is seeking a position in the emperor’s court. He is extravagant, arrogant, juvenile, foul-mouthed, and impulsive in social and political situations, but creates unbelievably remarkable music. He eventually loses support in court, and, unable to secure a steady income, becomes a poverty-stricken alcoholic and struggles to survive.

 

11/17/2021 - Zoe Shakespear as Rosalind Penderwick (The Penderwicks: A Summer Tale of Four Sisters, Two Rabbits, and a Very Interesting Boy)

A caring, responsible 12-year-old, Rosalind, as the eldest sibling, has looked after the family since her beloved mother died four years prior. Rosalind, in more than one way, acts as the parent-like sibling and usually is the voice of reason among the sisters. However, throughout the first book, she tries to figure out her true feelings for Cagney, the gardener at Arundel Hall. She enjoys baking, and speaking on the phone with her best friend, Anna, and is also quite skilled at basketball. She begins dating her neighbor Tommy Geiger several months after her thirteenth birthday in April.

In February 1941, Private Robert E. Lee Prewitt, nicknamed "Prew", reports to his new posting at G Company, a US Army infantry unit stationed at Schofield Barracks in Hawaii. Prew is a career soldier (a "thirty-year man") with six years' service, an excellent bugler, and a former boxer. He was transferred from his last unit, a Bugle Corps, with a reduction to the lowest rank after complaining that a less skilled bugler, who was a friend (possibly a romantic partner) of the Chief Bugler, had been made First Bugler over him.

The story of a deeply intense and difficult relationship. Sophie is beautiful, Polish, and Catholic, and a survivor of the Holocaust and Nazi concentration camps.

The chosen hero of the goddesses and sworn defender of Princess Zelda, Link begins his journey waking from a 100-year-long sleep. He has no recollection of who he is. He discovers that he is the one fated to wield the sword of evil’s bane, the Master Sword, and defeat the dark lord Ganon.

 

10/20/2021 - Aubrey Ransom as Clementine (The Walking Dead)

The Walking Dead: Clementine is a young girl who is thrust into the middle of the zombie apocalypse.  After the death of her babysitter, she is taken into the care of Lee Everett.  Lee does his best to protect and teach her how to fend her herself in the horrifying new world they occupy.  Ultimately, she is forced to make a choice: let Lee turn into a Walker or put a bullet in his head.

10/13/2021 - Jason Green as Kratos (God of War video game)

Once the mighty god of war among the Greek pantheon, after killing Ares and taking his role, Kratos has abandoned his quest for vengeance in 2018’s God of War.  Instead, he travels with his son, Atreus, across Midgard of Norse mythology to fulfill his late wife’s dying wish of having her ashes spread at the highest peaks of the nine realms.  While once a man ruled by rage and hatred, this Kratos has decided to learn from his past, and no longer let such emotions take control.

Poison Ivy is an enemy and lover of Batman. She is depicted as one of the world's most prominent eco-terrorists. She is obsessed with plants, botany, and environmentalism. She uses toxins from plants and her own bloodstream for her criminal activities, which are usually aimed at protecting the natural environment.


9.29.2020 - Fred Rowley as Carl Fredrickson (Up)

After Ellie's death, Carl has become lonely, cranky, and bitter and misses his wife terribly. Though with Russell's help, he became nicer. Carl has the typical stubborn character of a man his age but deep down he's a kind person but has his limits in patience and temper.

 

9.22.2021 - Paislee Barlow as Frankie Foster

Frances "Frankie" Foster is the deuteragonist of Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends. She is the caretaker at her grandmother's home for imaginary friends. Frankie is very kind, loving, caring, and good-hearted, but she’s also short-tempered, sarcastic and stubborn.

Years ago, Princess of Fiona, was locked away in a dragon-guarded castle, with the only hope of escape being the promise that one day, her prince charming would come and save her.  To her surprise, when her rescuer finally came, it was no knight in shining armor, but an ogre named Shrek.  Shrek kisses her while in ogre form and she finds her one true love.

 

9.1.2021 - Gabe Smith as Hiccup (How to Train Your Dragon)

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III is everything a Viking shouldn’t be: scrawny, clumsy, and worst of all, incapable of fighting dragons. Hiccup aims to remedy that, and prove to his father, the chief of Berk, that he can be the Viking everyone wants him to be.  Upon knocking a Night Fury out of the sky, he discovers he does not want to kill dragons and that they’re not monstrous beasts.

Though quiet, Daenerys is confident, determined, and remarkably resilient. Her steadfast fixation on the Throne can be off-putting at times, and this might be largely due to gender expectations surrounding women in power rather than a personality or psychological deficit.

 

8/18/2021 - Clayton Brush as Han Solo (Star Wars)

Han Solo, the brash smuggler captain with a heart of gold, is charismatic and sexy, the funniest character in A New Hope, and likable despite his apparent arrogance and selfishness. A major key to understanding Han’s character is the clue provided by his last name. Han is used to looking after only himself, with the Wookie Chewbacca as the lone exception to the rule.

Five disappeared by using his power of time travel to escape into the future. Sir Reginald always warned him that he "could never go back.“  It took him 45 years to figure out how to go back in time. He aged normally during his time in the apocalypse, but upon returning to the past he regained the appearance he had the day he travelled forwards.


8.4.2021 - Bruce Winslow as Doc Brown (Back to the Future)

Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown, Ph.D. is the inventor of the first time machine, built out of a 1981 DeLorean sports car, The character's appearance and mannerisms are loosely inspired by Leopold Stokowski and  Albert Einstein. In 2008, Dr. Emmett Brown was selected by Empire magazine as one of The 100 Greatest Movie Characters of All Time, ranking at #20.

 

7.29.2021 - Janeth Valerius as Thorn Harvestar

Thorn Harvestar is the deuteragonist of the Bone series and a minor character in Quest for the Spark. Fone Bone developed a crush on her from the moment they met and the two became close friends. She is revealed to be the heir to the Atheian throne. She takes the throne in the final volume of the series.

 

7.21.2021 - Juleann Valerius as Death

In the stories, Death is both the end of life and a psychopomp. Like most personifications of death, Death meets with the recently deceased and guides them into their new existence. However, unlike most personifications of death, she also visits people as they are born.


7.15.2021 - Megan Decker as Rosie Cotton

Her early life is not well recorded but it is known that she and her family were always close to the Gamgees, and her brothers frequently swam in the Bywater Pool as youths with the Gamgees including Sam. Being very close friends with Sam, she expected that they would eventually marry. Thus, didn't like it when she heard Sam had left the Shire. Though not pleased she waited patiently.

7.7.2021 - Justin DeGroff as Jughead Jones

Forsythe Pendleton "Jughead" Jones III, is one of the fictional characters created by Bob Montana and John L. Goldwater in Archie Comics. He is the drummer of the Archies and the son of Forsythe Pendleton Jones II. He has a white sheepdog named Hot Dog and a younger sister, Forsythia "Jellybean" Jones.

 

6.30.2021 - Brittany Buehler as Sally Bowles (Cabaret)

Sally Bowles, a young American woman who sings on the stage of the Kit Kat Klub in Berlin and dreams of becoming an actress someday, is the female protagonist of the film Cabaret.

Onstage, Sally creates a persona as a femme fatale, seducing the audience members in the club and in the movie theater.

 

6.23.2021 - Kent Barney as Sweeney Todd

The character of Sweeney Todd originated in serialized Victorian popular fiction. A story called The String of Pearls was published in a weekly magazine during the winter of 1846–47. Set in 1785, the story featured the villain, Sweeney Todd. The murderous barber’s story proved instantly popular. It was turned into a play before the ending had even been revealed in print.

The female lead of Hairspray. A "pleasantly plump" teenager, who dreams of fame and fights to racially integrate The Corny Collins Show.


6.9.2021 - Cort Dunlap as Missionary:
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
(The Book of Mormon Musical)

A satirical examination of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' beliefs and practices that ultimately endorses the positive power of love and service. It follows two Latter-day Saint missionaries to a Ugandan village. They are challenged by the lack of interest from the locals, who are distracted by more pressing issues such as HIV/AIDS, famine, female genital mutilation, and oppression from warlords.

 

6.2.2021 - Katrina Wood as Riley Anderson/Sadness (Inside Out)

In Disney and Pixar’s Inside Out, there exists five emotions within everyone’s head: Joy, Disgust, Fear, Anger, and Sadness.  For Riley Andersen, the emotion most often in control is Joy,  until she moves to San Francisco with her family. When Sadness touches one of Riley’s core memories and alters it to become sad, the result is that those memories become lost in the recesses of her mind.

 

5.26.2021 - Randall McUne as Tom Joad (The Grapes of Wrath)

Tom is kind and often merciful, yet quick to anger and fiercely independent. As a man of action, he embodies one of the novel's main philosophical strands, pragmatism. Tom is concerned with the practical aspects of his life as they relate to the here and now, not the moral or ideological circumstances surrounding his actions.

5.19.2020 - Macie Adams as Anne Frank

Annelies Marie “Anne” Frank was a world-famous German-born diarist and WW II Holocaust victim. Her work, The Diary of Anne Frank, has been read by millions. Fleeing Nazi persecution, her family moved to Amsterdam and later went into hiding for two years. She died at 15 at Bergen-Belson Concentration Camp, Germany.

5.12.2021 - Trevor Marshall as Stanley Kowalski
(Streetcar Named Desire)

Stanley is the epitome of vital force. He is loyal to his friends, passionate to his wife, and heartlessly cruel to Blanche. With his Polish ancestry, he represents the new, heterogeneous America. He sees himself as a social leveler and wishes to destroy Blanche's social pretensions.

5.5.2021 - Hannah Melling as Lorena Wood (Lonesome Dove)

A beautiful young woman from Alabama who was coerced into prostitution by a former lover, later washing up in Lonesome Dove, where she works as the town's only whore. Lorena is taciturn, strong-willed and intimidating, generally viewing her clients and admirers with contempt. Discontent with her life, Lorena longs to travel to San Francisco.

Dolittle is a kind, gentle sort. He will do anything to protect the downtrodden, particularly animals. He is also a man of his word, and will uphold any bargain he has made, even if it should take years for him to be able to follow through. When confronted, the good doctor also knows when right is on his side (which is always). Thus, he will not back down, and will not negotiate.

4.21.2021 - Brooklyn Hulet as Meg Murry (A Wrinkle in Time)

An intelligent adolescent  with braces, glasses, and low self-esteem. She helps her friend, Calvin, with his math homework, even though she is several years behind him in school. Her intelligence isn't rewarded in school. For example, she's good at math but hates to write down all the steps. Meg goes on a space adventure where she gets to call on some of her better qualities and show what she's made of.

4.14.2021 - Miguel Baldonado as Hector "Zero" Zeroni (Holes)

Zero is known to be the best digger at Camp Green Lake. So often, he is considered "stupid" or a mere nothing by the other boys and the counselors at the lake. He lacks an education. However, he is smart and manages to stand for himself in the face of adversity, breaking Mr. Pendanski's nose with a shovel after one too many snide remarks.

4.7.2021 - Coty Brush as Sarah Wheaton (Sarah Plain and Tall)

Sarah describes herself as strong, a hard worker and not particularly mild of manner - very much a stereotypical Yankee woman. It is her response to a personal advertisement in the newspaper for a companion to the widowed Jacob who can take on the roles normally reserved for mother to his two children that brings her into the orbit of Jacob and his family. Sarah proves herself more than capable of standing up to Jacob while also occasionally demonstrating endearing acts of pure femininity.

In this beautiful graphic memoir, perfectly cast in muted beach tones, Dungo interweaves his story of first love with his girlfriend’s passion for surfing, her heroism in the face of cancer, and a primer on the history of surfing.

3.24.2021 - Kiante Paris as Starr Carter (The Hate U Give)

Starr Carter has learned to live in two worlds, managing her life as a prep-school student by day while returning each night to the low-income neighborhood she calls home. After witnessing the murder of her unarmed friend Khalil by a police officer, these two worlds collide, and Starr must decide what risks she is willing to take to pursue justice.

Special thanks to Mackenzie. Tonight's model was unable to attend. Mackenzie is a library patron and was minding her own business, as she selected materials to check out and take home. She was asked to model with no warning and graciously accepted the invitation.

Yvaine was an evening star, who loved to observe the actions of humans down below. She lived in the sky along with her mother and extended family for hundreds of years. According to the novel, she has a beautiful voice and tells Tristan that she loved to sing with her sisters.

“Vincent and Theo” depicts the interdependence of the two Dutch brothers, from their childhood in an austere nineteenth century Dutch parsonage to the Parisian fin de siècle demimonde, as Theo champions and pragmatically supports his brother as he battles the demons of both mental illness and familial expectations.

Roxanne dreamed of a career in vaudeville but, despite dating noted mobster Al Capelli and getting some press attention as a socialite, is never able to break into the business beyond some work as a chorus girl in a seedy nightclub on Chicago's South Side. Defeated, she falls for auto mechanic Amos Hart, a kind-hearted but meek and naïve man with a stable working-class income; his relationship with Roxie is more like a father figure than a romantic partner.

A rags to riches American Dream story of Rocky Balboa, an uneducated, kind-hearted working class Italian-American boxer, working as a debt collector for a loan shark in the slums of Philadelphia. Rocky, a small-time club fighter, gets a shot at the world heavyweight championship.

In 1948, Daisy Werthan, or Miss Daisy, a 72-year-old wealthy, Jewish, widowed, retired schoolteacher, lives alone in Atlanta, Georgia, except for a black housekeeper, Idella. When Miss Daisy drives her 1946 Chrysler Windsor into her neighbor's yard, her 40-year-old son Boolie buys her a 1949 Hudson Commodore and hires Hoke Colburn, a black chauffeur. Miss Daisy at first refuses to let anyone else drive her, but gradually accedes to the arrangement.

A Jewish prince from Jerusalem, who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the first century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah's narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, from the same region and around the same age.
