Aurora Beam’s life changes when she discovers that she can shoot light from her palms. She comes from a long line of female superheroes, with her mom saving the world daily and her aunt Lucinda using powers of persuasion to make her life more glamorous. But when superhero training starts to interfere with their lives—including Aurora flaking out on her best friend and the trial separation of Mr. and Mrs. Beam—Aurora isn’t sure she wants to use her powers for good or evil. Luckily, she doesn’t have to keep the secret too long; her powers malfunction on a class trip to see her dad’s upcoming museum exhibit. After forming the Bright Sparks squad, the kids soon realize a villain from Mrs. Beam’s past is planning on stealing gems during opening night! This series starter, previously published in the UK, brings an upbeat, Black-girl superhero to a new audience. While it sometimes treads familiar ground, Dixon’s debut proves to be a charmingly quick read, reminiscent of a more G-rated Black Lightning.
