Alabama Mosaic

The Carl Elliott Regional Library and its branch libraries have collected and archived numerous images of landmarks, businesses, churches, schools, and people from throughout Walker and Winston Counties. In cooperation with the Alabama Department of Archives and History and the Network of Alabama Academic Libraries, the Carl Elliott Regional library has digitized and made available these images to the public.
Our collection of hundreds of images is hosted by Alabama Mosaic, an online repository created by the National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The library will be adding items to the collection as we receive them, so make sure to check for new items weekly.

The Luis Rushing Collection

The largest collection of images in our possession was donated to the Jasper Public Library by Luis Rushing, a professional photographer from Jasper. Most of Mr. Rushing's collection housed by the Carl Elliott Regional Library was taken in 1939 or 1940 in Jasper, Alabama. We have digitized his collection, and you may browse Mr. Rushing's collection here.

Mr. Rushing was kind enough to donate a large volume from his personal collection in 1992, and after his death in 1998, Mr. Rushing's family donated several more images from his private collection. Most of the material donated after his death were of images from the islands of Guadalcanal, Guam, and New Caledonia where Mr. Rushing was stationed while he was enlisted in the Navy during World War II. All of these images as well as some from other contributors can be seen in our World War II Collection

1974 Walker and Winston County Tornadoes

The 1974 tornadoes that rolled through Walker and Winston County brought incalculable devastation to the area. Our collection of historical photos of the aftermath of this event is on display to the public here.
