The Children's Room offers many types of programs for children starting at birth and continuing though 5th Grade. We offer three different storytimes as well as, crafts, storywalks, STEAM programs. Below we have outlined our programs based on age range. Don't forget to check out our programs and events for all ages as well. 

The Children's Room also offers other services and resources beyond programming to all of Greenwood County's children. Please check the main Children's Room webpage for links to resources such as Early Literacy Programs, parent and grandparent resources, digital materials, Developmental Disorders, and our YouTube Channel.

About:
All are invited to bring your baby or toddler to Tiny Tots StoryTime. Tiny Tots is more than a storytime. This time allows children to make friends and socialize with each other through dancing, singing, crafts, and just being silly together! Parents also form lasting friendships with each other making for a very happy, carefree, and supportive experience. Join us every Thursday at 10:30AM.

Bilingual Story Time

About:
This storytime is all about learning and sharing our different languages. We will read both English and Spanish stories, sing English and Spanish songs, and learn about Spanish and American culture!

Exposure to different languages at an early age has multiple benefits such as:

  • Increased ability to solve problems, think creatively and recognize patterns.
  • Improved academic performance.
  • Enhanced linguistic awareness and understanding of an individual's native language

Furry Tales StoryTime

About:
This story time is an all-time favorite at the Main Branch! Each month, the Children's Room staff partners with the Humane Society of Greenwood County to provide a special story time for our Furry Friends who are looking for their Fur-ever Homes. Children, tweens, and teens of all ages are welcome to join us for stories and pets with a special guest doggie.

Therapy Dog Storytime

Join us this Friday, November 17 at 3PM for a special Therapy Dog storytime with local author, Marsha Horshok and her therapy dog in training, Ozzie!  Geared towards homeschoolers ages K5-5th grades.

Board Game Club

The following Thursdays at 4PM to 5PM
American Veterans Auditorium
Grades 3rd-12th

Tweens* and teens in grades 3rd - 12th can join us for Board Game Club in the American Veterans Auditorium. We will have several games available to play on different skill and grade levels. 

We will occasionally split the Teens to a different table from the Tweens if they want to play a game that is more appropriate for older ages

*We consider Tweens to be somewhere between the ages of 8-12, but since we go by grade level, we have expanded the "tween ages" to grades 3rd-8th. Parents are welcome to stay and play a game with your child too!

Pumpkin Painting - ALL AGES
 
Wednesday, October 4 : 4-5PM
American Veterans Auditorium

It's October... and the Library's Pumpkin Contest is right around the corner! Make a painted pumpkin that can be entered into the Spook Night Pumpkin Contest* on Monday, October 9th (5-7:30 PM).

Children (1st grade and up), Tweens, Teens, and Adults are all able to attend!

Space is limited, so please register online or at the Children's, Teen, or Circulation Desks.

Spook Night - A Free All Ages Event!

Monday, October 9: 5PM - 7:30PM

About: We are so excited to announce our second annual Spook Night at the Greenwood County Library! This will be an indoor/outdoor event with a Halloween Costume Contest, Pumpkin Contest, Magician, games, and more!

Rainy Day: In the event of bad weather, Spook Night will move entirely into the American Veterans Auditorium. 

Rules/Disclaimers:

  • Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult AT ALL TIMES
  • All candy and swag will be available WHILE SUPPLIES LAST

B-Rad, The Magician's "Super Duper Fun Magic Show"

5PM - American Veterans Auditorium

B-Rad will kick off the festivities for Spook Night with his "Super Duper Fun Magic Show." Come be amazed and laugh your head off at B-Rad's blend of comedy and magic. 

This show will be fun for all ages! No Registration Required.

Halloween Costume Contest

6PM - American Veteran's Auditorium

​By popular request, we will be adding a costume contest to this year! This will be a family-friendly contest, so keep it clean and an appropriate level of scary.

  • Contest Categories: Baby and Toddler (Ages 0-3) Children (Grades K4-5th), Teen (Grades 6th-12th) and Adults (18+)
  • Prizes: A trophy for best overall costume will be awarded in each age bracket for costumes that display the most outstanding Quality, Accuracy, Effort, and Presentation.
  • Ribbons for scariest, cutest, funniest, and most creative will be awarded in each age bracket.*
  • Costumes of all shapes and sizes are allowed. Superheroes, supervillans, princesses, puppies, fairies, pirates, robots, and Jedis are all welcome!
  • Group Costumes: You are welcome to dress in coordinating group costumes, but each costume will be judged individually.
  • Judges will be looking for the spookiest, sparkliest, most colorful, craziest, well-crafted and creative costumes. Costumes may be homemade or store bought.

Halloween Pumpkin Patch

5PM - 7:15PM - Library Lawn (by flagpoles)

Bring your best decorated pumpkin to our Halloween Pumpkin Patch and show off your skills. Spooky or cute, you can decide, but will you have the best Halloween Pumpkin?

Check out the rules below:
  • Enter your pumpkin into one of four entry categories: Children (Birth - 5th Grade), Teen (6th -12th Grade), Adults, or Group/Family.
  • You may enter more than one pumpkin, but only one pumpkin per category. For example, an adult can submit a pumpkin they did themselves in the Adult Category as well as a pumpkin in the Group/Family category if they did one with another person, regardless of their age.
  • Pumpkins can be painted or carved
  • Register your pumpkin for the Pumpkin Patch no later than noon on October 9th. Fill out a paper registration form at the Circulation Desk, Children's Room, or Teen Center.

You can bring your pumpkin to the Library between between Noon - 5:00 PM on October 9th.

All pumpkins will be on display from 5-7:30PM in our Pumpkin Patch. Voting will be open from 5-7PM

Voting:
  • Everyone who comes to the Spook Night will be able to tour the Pumpkin Patch and vote on their favorites.
  • Each of the four categories will have a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winner. 1st Place will receive a trophy. 2nd and 3rd Places will receive a ribbon. All winners will have their picture taken and shared on our social media accounts.
  • Staff will tally up the results beginning at 7PM.
  • Winners will be announced at 7:15PM

Display:

You can allow your pumpkins to be put on display in the Library until Friday, October 13. All pumpkins must be picked up no later than 5PM on October 13. Any leftover pumpkins will be discarded.

Monster Bowling:

Roll your ball and see how many monsters you can take down.

Cake Walk:

Walk to the beat of Halloween music. When the music stops, will you be lucky enough to win a cake?

Fun Stuff:

Swag Table:

Make sure to stop by the swag table to pick out your spooky gifts and candy. Available while supplies last. Parents are responsible for picking up swag for children under 11.

Tattoo Station:

Make sure to grab a temporary tattoo to show off at school tomorrow!

Homeschoolers who are in kindergarten-fifth grade are invited for an hour of learning and a fun-filled activity on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.

We all know that bears hibernate in the winter, but did you know that hedgehogs do, too? Join us to learn about our animal friends who sleep through the cold and we'll also make a fun craft. Geared towards homeschoolers ages K5-5th grades.
