Arthur's frisky younger sister passes her tricycle down to baby Kate and hops on a new pink two-wheeler in this light, rather slight caper featuring Brown's cheerful aardvark family (see above). The youngster immediately takes a tumble, and Arthur decides to give her a lesson in bicycle riding and safety. After learning how to ride in traffic, use hand signals and avoid unfriendly dogs, the overconfident D.W. insists that her training wheels be removed. Dad complies with her wishes but quickly recants, and D.W. gets the auxiliary wheels back until she further hones her riding skills. Alas, in a characteristically wry Brown conclusion, it's Dad who has the final biking mishap, and D.W. generously offers him the use of her training wheels. Though not the most memorable of the Arthur adventures, this is good fun--with some worthwhile tips for beginning cyclers. K-Gr 2-Arthur's little sister D.W. has gotten a two-wheeler and thinks she's ready for the Tour-de-France. However, training wheels are in order at least until she learns where the brakes are. Arthur takes her out and teaches her the basics plus some safety rules, and soon the training wheels are ready to come off. The illustrations bring out D.W.'s irrepressible determination to triumph. Her facial expressions, body language, and conversation combine to produce a lovable personality in contrast to her brother's rather droll countenance. The pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are vibrant and fresh. Fiction: PB Speed and daredevil riding tricks are on D. W.'s mind now that it's time to trade in her tricycle for a two-wheeler. Her tumbles reconcile the show-off to learning the rules of the road, taught by ever-patient Arthur. The story provides an effective lesson in the rudiments of bicycle safety, and Brown continues to evoke chuckles with his warmly colored crayon sketches. Horn Rating: Superior, well above average. Ages 4-8. In this fourth book featuring Arthur the aardvark's younger sister, the irrepressible D.W. has just graduated from her tricycle to a new bike. A terror on the road ("Where are the brakes?"), D.W. accepts bike instruction from big brother Arthur and puts in practice time with her training wheels attached. Finally ready for a test ride without her training wheels, D.W. passes with flying colors just in time to lend her training wheels to Father, whose test ride is not quite so successful. Snappy with visual humor and D.W. dialogue, this story is a delightful romp with which all young riders can certainly identify and enjoy. ~--Annie Ayres
